This is the first of several blogs that I will post each week to try to keep updates on the weather in the Starkville, Mississippi area.
There's not very much going on with the weather right now; basically, the main story is this relentless heat! We are supposed to have a cold front try to push through the area towards the end of this week, but as of right now, it does not appear to offer much relief from the heat. At least, though, our rain chances will increase a little, and maybe we can get a little of some much-needed rain.
Just a little weather history for you...on this day in 1987, "severe thunderstorms broke the heat in the southeastern U.S. and the Gulf Coast Region, but not before seven cities reported record high temperatures for the date. The severe thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 80 mph downing large trees around Horse Shoe NC, and pelted southeastern Meridian MS with hail two inches in diameter"(http://www.weatherforyou.com/history/). I wanted to put this on here because I am actually from Meridian, MS, but unfortunately I do not remember this particular event because I was only 1 year old. I thought it was still interesting though.
